MCS-150
How to file your MCS-150 yourself
By the DOT Compliance Partner team · April 6, 2026 · 4 min read
You file an MCS-150 yourself through FMCSA's Licensing and Insurance system, now called the Unified Registration System (URS) or accessed via the FMCSA Portal. There is no government fee to file it — it's free.
What you'll need before you start
- Your USDOT number
- Your FMCSA Portal login (or Login.gov account if you haven't set one up yet)
- Current information: fleet size, driver count, operation type, principal address
The filing itself
Log into the FMCSA Portal, find the MCS-150 update option, confirm or update each field, and submit. FMCSA will show your updated information in its SAFER system once it processes — usually within a few days.
What trips people up
- Logging in is the hard part if you haven't used the portal before — have your Login.gov credentials ready
- Fleet size should reflect power units, not trailers
- Filing is due on a schedule tied to your USDOT number, not a calendar year — check your specific due date before you start
If you'd rather not spend time learning the portal, or if your information has changed and you want it filed correctly, that's what our MCS-150 service is for.
