What is the FMCSA SAFER system?
By the DOT Compliance Partner team · June 8, 2026 · 3 min read
SAFER stands for Safety and Fitness Electronic Records. It's FMCSA's publicly accessible database where anyone can look up a carrier's registration status, operating authority, safety rating, and inspection history by USDOT number or company name.
What SAFER shows
- Carrier name, address, and registration status (active, inactive, authorized)
- Operating authority type and status
- Insurance filings on record
- Safety rating, if one has been issued
- Inspection summary and out-of-service history
- MCS-150 last filed date
Who uses SAFER
Shippers, brokers, and freight platforms check SAFER to verify a carrier before awarding loads. Roadside enforcement officers access it during inspections. Carriers use it to confirm their own information is current.
Updating your SAFER record
The information in SAFER comes from your FMCSA filings. If your address, fleet size, or operation type has changed, you update it by filing an MCS-150. Changes appear in SAFER once FMCSA processes the filing.
