CDL endorsements explained

Updated September 1, 2026

Endorsements are additional authorizations added to a CDL for specific cargo or vehicle types. Each generally requires its own testing, and some require additional background screening.

  • H — Hazardous materials
  • N — Tank vehicles
  • X — Combination of hazmat and tank
  • T — Double and triple trailers
  • P — Passenger vehicles
  • S — School bus

Why it matters for the carrier, not just the driver

Putting a driver on a load their endorsements don't cover is a compliance problem for the company, not only the driver. It's worth confirming endorsements at hire and keeping that in the driver qualification file.

This is general orientation, not legal or regulatory advice. Requirements change and vary by operation — confirm specifics with the relevant agency or a qualified advisor before acting on them.
