Driver Requirements

What documents should be in the truck?

Updated September 1, 2026

Exactly what's required depends on your operation, your cargo and where you're running. This is a starting checklist, not a complete or authoritative list — confirm the specifics for your operation.

  • Vehicle registration (including apportioned/IRP cab card if applicable)
  • Proof of insurance
  • IFTA license and decals, if applicable
  • The driver's CDL with any endorsements the cargo requires
  • The driver's medical examiner's certificate, if required for that driver
  • Records of duty status — ELD or supporting documents as applicable
  • Annual vehicle inspection report
  • Shipping papers, and for hazmat, the required documentation and emergency response information

Why it matters beyond the ticket

Missing paperwork is one of the more avoidable categories of violation, and violations feed into your safety record — which affects more than that single stop.

This is general orientation, not legal or regulatory advice. Requirements change and vary by operation — confirm specifics with the relevant agency or a qualified advisor before acting on them.
