Do I need a DOT number if my truck is under 10,001 lbs?

Federal USDOT registration is generally required for vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 10,000 lbs operating in interstate commerce, or vehicles of any size carrying hazardous materials that require placarding. If your vehicle's GVWR is 10,000 lbs or less and you're not carrying hazmat, federal registration typically isn't required — but state requirements may still apply.

GVWR vs actual weight

The threshold is based on GVWR — the manufacturer's rated maximum, not how much weight you're actually carrying. A pickup with a GVWR over 10,000 lbs crosses the threshold regardless of whether it's loaded or empty.

When smaller vehicles still need a DOT number

  • Hauling hazardous materials requiring placarding, regardless of weight
  • Transporting a certain number of passengers for compensation
  • Some states have their own registration requirements for smaller commercial vehicles

Intrastate operations

Operating entirely within one state with no interstate connection may fall under state rather than federal requirements. State thresholds vary — some mirror federal rules, some are stricter. Check with your state's DOT office if you're not sure.
