DOT number vs. MC number

It's one of the most common points of confusion for new carriers, and the short version is this: a USDOT number identifies your company. An MC number (operating authority) is permission to operate for-hire.
You can have a USDOT number without an MC number — that's typical for private carriers. You generally can't get an MC number without a USDOT number, since the authority is tied to your company's registration.
