MCS-150

How to update your USDOT number information

By the DOT Compliance Partner team · June 15, 2026 · 3 min read

You update your USDOT information by filing an MCS-150 through the FMCSA Portal. You don't need to wait for your biennial due date — you can file an update any time your information changes. There is no fee to file.

When you should update immediately

  • Your principal business address changes
  • Your fleet size changes significantly (adding or removing vehicles)
  • Your driver count changes significantly
  • You change from for-hire to private operations or vice versa
  • Your company name or legal structure changes

Why it matters

SAFER is a public record. Shippers and brokers see your FMCSA information when they look up your DOT number. Outdated information can raise questions during a roadside inspection or when a shipper's compliance check flags a discrepancy.

How to file

Log into the FMCSA Portal, select the MCS-150 option, update the fields that have changed, and submit. FMCSA will process the filing and update SAFER within a few business days.
