MCS-150

What happens if your MCS-150 is late?

By the DOT Compliance Partner team · April 20, 2026 · 3 min read

If you miss your MCS-150 due date, FMCSA can mark your carrier registration as inactive. An inactive registration means your DOT number shows as inactive in FMCSA's SAFER system, which can affect roadside inspections, load boards, and shipper relationships.

What 'inactive' actually means

An inactive status doesn't mean your authority is revoked — it means your registration is out of date. The fix is to file the overdue MCS-150, after which FMCSA will update your status. How quickly depends on FMCSA processing.

Can you still operate?

Operating with an inactive USDOT registration can be cited during a roadside inspection as a violation. Enforcement varies, but it's a risk you don't want when the fix is a free filing.

What to do if you're already late

  • File the MCS-150 as soon as possible — even if it's overdue, filing it is better than not filing
  • Check your status in FMCSA's SAFER system after filing to confirm it updates
  • Consider setting a calendar reminder or using a reminder service to prevent it happening again
