Operating Authority

Do I need an MC number?

By the DOT Compliance Partner team · January 26, 2026 · 4 min read

A USDOT number and an MC number (operating authority) answer different questions. Your USDOT number identifies your company. Your MC number is permission to operate as a for-hire carrier or broker.

When you generally need one

If you're hauling your own freight only — a private carrier — you typically need a USDOT number but not operating authority. If you're transporting goods that belong to someone else for payment, you generally need both.

When it gets less clear

Mixed operations, leasing arrangements, and brokered freight can all change the answer. If you're not sure, it's worth checking your specific setup rather than guessing.
