USDOT & MC Numbers
How do I cancel a USDOT or MC number? Can it be reinstated?
Updated September 1, 2026
If you've stopped operating, you generally cancel a USDOT number by filing an MCS-150 indicating the business is no longer in operation. Leaving it active but unmaintained is what causes problems — the recurring update requirement doesn't stop just because you parked the truck.
Why people cancel
- The business closed or was sold
- The operation became intrastate-only
- A second USDOT number was issued by mistake and needs to be retired
Can you get it back?
Reinstating depends on why the number went inactive and how long it's been. A number that lapsed for a missed update is a different situation than one deliberately cancelled, and operating authority that was revoked has its own process. If you're trying to restart an old operation, tell us the number and we'll look at what state it's actually in before you make plans around it.
This is general orientation, not legal or regulatory advice. Requirements change and vary by operation — confirm specifics with the relevant agency or a qualified advisor before acting on them.
