USDOT & MC Numbers

USDOT number vs MC number: what's the difference?

Updated September 1, 2026

A USDOT number identifies your company in FMCSA's system. An MC number — operating authority — is permission to operate as a for-hire carrier or broker. They're not interchangeable.

Which do you need?

  • Hauling only your own company's freight: generally a USDOT number, no MC number
  • Hauling freight belonging to someone else for payment: generally both
  • Arranging transportation as a broker: generally both, with broker authority specifically

You can hold a USDOT number without an MC number. You generally can't get an MC number without a USDOT number, since the authority attaches to your company's registration.

This is general orientation, not legal or regulatory advice. Requirements change and vary by operation — confirm specifics with the relevant agency or a qualified advisor before acting on them.
