USDOT & MC Numbers

What is the MCS-150 biennial update?

Updated September 1, 2026

The MCS-150 is how you keep your carrier information current with FMCSA — fleet size, driver count, operation type, address and contact details.

The part that catches people out

It's generally required on a recurring schedule tied to your USDOT number, whether or not anything about your business has changed. "Nothing changed, so there's nothing to file" is the single most common reason a registration goes inactive.

What happens if you miss it

Your registration can be marked inactive, which can affect your ability to operate legally. It's usually straightforward to bring current — the problem is that most carriers find out at the worst possible moment, like at a scale house.

This is general orientation, not legal or regulatory advice. Requirements change and vary by operation — confirm specifics with the relevant agency or a qualified advisor before acting on them.
